DESIGNING MRI MAGNETIC SHIELDING
In modern MRI systems, very strong magnetic fields are produced by the magnet system, which must be modelled precisely by electromagnetic analysis software.
These modelling packages are also used to specify the scope and thickness of a magnetic field shield needed to contain the 5 Gauss field line, (or lower levels if required), in a public area.

Note that the 5 gauss line, the red line in the model, extends well beyond the back wall before magnetic shielding is applied. Individuals with pacemakers are at risk if they enter within the 5 gauss line area.

The example of Magnetic field shielding shown below protects the exterior of a building (public access area) behind an MRI room.
This particular example is a 3T MRI magnet placed in a room 22 feet long x 17 feet wide. The first picture is with no magnetic shielding. The second picture is after using our proprietary software to model the necessary steel needed to contain the 5 gauss line within a safe distance to prevent any possible access by the public.
